The Kindness of Roger

The Perry and the Sinclair families grew up in Norfolk together.  Bill Perry is closer in age to my brothers, but in recent years when he came back to visit Norfolk we often got together over our common interest in outdoor adventure.  Bill took a great interest in the American Discovery Trail journey from the start, and helped to plug this web site among fellow Canadian adventurers, but this post is not about Bill.

Roger Monty was before my time when he left Norfolk, but Bill knew him well from growing up together.  Roger lived in Roseville, just outside of Sacramento.  Bill alerted both him and us about coming through the Roseville area.  Roger emailed me near the beginning of the journey to stay with him and his wife Barbara.

Besides the hospitality of his home Roger came out to hike with us as our trail brought us along the shores of Folsom Lake.  As with Leslie a few days earlier, having someone hike with us was a treasured part of the journey.  The most significant contribution Roger made was giving birth to the idea of folks we met along the way coming to watch us finish the hike in Norfolk.  The idea was entertained by many we met along the way, though followed up by few, with Roger being one of them.
