Most people have seen a food pyramid indicating the proportions of different types of food we should eat. At the bottom of the pyramid, indicating the food we should eat the most, are fruits and vegetables. There are a variety of organizations recommending minimum requirements of various nutrients. Studies indicate that the nutrient intake of early nomads surpassed each of the various recommendations.
This kind of reminds me of one of those seemingly trivial studies that yet has some deep meaning. Infants were put in a controlled setting where they could choose a variety of foods to eat. They tended to choose a balanced diet, what was good for them, until chocolate was introduced as a choice. Civilization has acted like chocolate in regards to the impact on our diets.
