Husky Monument

During our tour through the Mojave I stumbled upon an interesting story in Randsburg. This place is billed as the living ghost mining town with the old style soda fountain. A walk along Main Street passes antique stores more than any other, including antique mining supplies. You will also find a combined art gallery and photo studio.

The photographer is Tom O’Donnell, our gracious guide for the place. Being an ardent UConn basketball fan his photo title Husky Monument immediately caught my eye. I asked Tom for the story behind the photo.

The Husky in this case has to do with dirt bikes. The passing of an avid dirt biker was celebrated by setting his Husky bike in concrete far out in the Mojave desert. Over time other dirt bikers wanted to be similarly memorialized and the original monument is now more of a graveyard full of dirt bike parts.

Of course I will have to share this Husky graveyard with the Husky Boneyard, a fan forum site for UConn basketball I frequent. I found out that Tom is an ardent sports fan as well. I did not hold it against home that he originall hailed from SEC country. At least his team wasn’t Tennessee.
