The American Discovery Trail was designed for people to discover America. In so doing the ADT actually pieces together other trails and roads with connecting sections to provide a 6800 mile tour when both the northern and southern routes are explored. From trails to roads, mountains to desert, the ADT provides one of the most diverse hiking experiences in the world. Diverse footwear and clothing are called for as well.
When Kirk and Cindy hiked through northern California they faced a lot of rain followed by a lot of snow in the Sierra. In such conditions feet and socks become thoroughly wet without really good shoes. Good hiking boots need to be not only water-proof in such conditions but breathable as well, in order to keep sweaty feet dry. Durability is obviously a must, and anti-bacterial materials are the cherry on top.
When Kirk and Cindy trekked through Nevada and Utah they found themselves going through cold and wet mountains in the central portions of those states sandwiched in between hot and dry desert hiking. They experienced frost and hail on the one hand and 100+ degrees on the other. Whether one’s preference is warm tops, zippered jackets or soft hoodies the important things to look for are materials that wick away moisture, regulate body temperature, fit semi-snugly and are lightweight. Features such as thumb-holes and pony-tail holes are cool too.
There is awesome scenery, culture and history to discover along the American Discovery Trail. One can explore the Sierra mountain country along the Western States Trail or the Great Plains along the Santa Fe Trail, though each requires different footwear and gear to best enjoy your exploration. You can find a great selection of gear with Altrec Timberland, and they even offer free shipping at the moment. Their full line-up of footwear for all seasons and conditions will have exactly what you are looking for no matter what part of the American Discovery Trail you want to explore. Stay dry and enjoy discovering America!
