Route 125 to Peebles; Distance = 31 Miles; People Met = 8+
The previous post was entered before we met the Scheffler family at the Shawnee Lodge. They were playing a board game together and having a lot of fun. I asked them for the name of the game but, alas, I forgot it already.
That evening we arrived at the United Methodist Church in Blue Creek. They had their monthly dinner after service earlier that day and left us some delicious potluck plates. We attended Pastor Dennis Grooms Bible study class that evening.
The next morning I chatted with Sharon Bell, who lives behind the church. As a youth and family mediator in the court system she related a story of kindness about four youths and a woman which will be in the Ohio newsletter. Sharon has a spectacular view of the Blue Creek valley from her house.
This stretch contrasted with the last in being quite warm. One thing remains the same, barking dogs. I spoke too soon in lodging a complaint in the last post. Take a listen to this.
Now that we are on the Buckeye Trail I did not think we would meet as many people, but we still come into town occasionally. In Peebles we talked to Dave for awhile. As a truck driver he gave me a thumbs up to my idea for a road kill calendar. He related how he and his wife once drove a truck across the country in 38 hours. This past year he drove close to 300,000 miles and is now ready to retire.
When Dave first met us we were by a convenience store with our full backpacks, quenching our thirst on a warm day with Cokes and Gatorade. He left us and immediately afterwards Ky arrived and brought us to another store for food shopping. We saw Dave at that store as well and he did a double take, thinking that “Wow! These guys really are hikers!”
In the evening Ky brought us to the home of Jim and Beverly MacKenzie by the famous Serpent Mounds. Bev prepared a delicious supper of meat loaf, scalloped potatoes and brussel sprouts. We had started to set our tent up outside but Jim insisted we stay in their guest room. Good thing. A powerful storm came through during the night.
Jim and Bev are both heavily involved in the Serpent Mound events and attractions. They also granted a right of way for the Buckeye Trail to go through their property, and Jim works at maintaining that part of the trail. Bev is involved in many Adams County activities, including Girl Scouts and serving as a councilwoman.

Kirk and Cindy. Welcome to March . Can spring be far away? It is amazing to look at the map and see how little remains compared to the many miles behind you. Before we know it you will be back in Ct. Wishes for good health the rest of the way – Steve and Mary.
Greetings Steve and Mary,
Thanks for checking in. We have less days remaining than an AT hike! See you in a few months.
