Distance = 33 Miles; People Met = 2
We only met two people on this stretch, but what a couple we met? Also, Barrett and Buster hooked up with us once again. Together this provided quite a tonic or the blues I reported on in the previous post.
Concern for Noah did not totally leave Cindy as we left Green River, but calling her Mom in the morning did wonders for both of them. Then we saw something new! Yea! Indeed, something we were hoping to see for some time. Antelopes! Next to watching bighorn sheep charge up a box canyon, watching the fastest ungulate (hoofed animal) dash across the desert is something special to behold.
It’s always nice to have Barrett and Buster back, this time at least until Moab. We hiked together with full packs along Blue Hills Road. I was the designated shade provider for Buster. Whenever Barrett caught up to us, Buster would charge up to lie in the shade I provided, often the only shade to be found. We did find one tree on this stretch, which now gets my vote as the most isolated tree we’ve encountered yet.
I brought over 1 1/2 gallons of water for the 20 mile stretch spanning two days. Cindy brought a little under that; Barrett carried two gallons for him and his dog. Towards the end of the stretch Cindy and I continued ahead to send Ky back to deliver more water as man and dog were in danger of running out.
After reaching Utah 191 we headed into Moab and the home of Dave and Marilyn Stolfa. The Stolfas are our Lions contact for the presentation we will give Monday night. They provided showers and laundry and fed us royally. More importantly, they were genuinely glad to see us and chat with us. Dave is a retired electrical engineer, once specializing in integrated circuits. Marilyn is a retired elementary school teacher. We seemed to share so much in common in terms of viewpoints and interests. I can’t wait to see them again on Monday.
Enjoyed hearing your intelligent commentary at the Grand Center in Moab. Nice photo of the Stolfas (above). I wish more ‘community’ would have gathered to hear and meet you….I wish more of the community would join the Lions club….thanks
Thanks, Molly. We very much enjoyed the potluck with the Moab Lions Club.
