Fort Ashby to Old Town, MD; Distance = 12.5 Miles; People Met = 10+
West Virginia kindness continued right up until the end. Having pushed all the way into Fort Ashby to stay with TJ and Josh, we were in good shape to make an Easter service by 10:00 a.m. However, the service at Trinity United Methodist Church did not start until 11:00. In the meantime we dropped in on Sunday School and I joined the choir. I’ve received a few job offers during this trip, contingent on me staying behind and singing with the choir. On the other hand the basses I sang with, John and Rick, both made donations to our cause which eases our journey a little further along.
Pastor Mark Hickman chatted with us a bit after the service. He shared with us that his heart is now functioning at 20% due to a viral infection. We’ve been praying for him since.
Our good friend Gwen Jones was there one more time to welcome us into Maryland and the C&O towpath, but not before the most touching act of West Virginia kindness occurred. We were hiking by a family finishing up an Easter egg hunt and we yelled out “Happy Easter!” A few minutes later two young boys came rushing behind us saying they wanted to give us something: a little bit of their Easter egg treasure. A fitting last memory of West Virginia for us to keep.
Now it’s on to Maryland. We’ll be touching the Atlantic Ocean in less than a month.

Great updates Kirk. I loved the picture of the two boys on Easter.
Thanks, Gwen. On May 15 we arrive at Wawayanda Shelter along the Appalachian Trail. I’ve outlined our schedule from there to the finish.
