Lexington to Hanover; Distance = 13 Miles; People Met = 9+
We were chatting with our host Jay Munk in the morning when he tossed out if I would want to speak at the local high school. I said “Sure!” and within a half hour it was arranged for me to give a talk there at 10:00 a.m. that same morning. We stopped first at Budroe’s for breakfast, across from the school.
The presentation at the school was for the Key Club, affiliated with the Kiwanis Club. Since the Kiwanis have a humanitarian, community focus I made sure to emphasize the importance of young people being catalysts and the other ingredients that go into a vibrant community initiative. One student asked what they should do to make a difference. Two students wanted to take our pictures afterwards.
This was another day of many loose dogs. One followed us for awhile before I stopped at a house to ask Rick Christy to return the dog to its owner. Later a puppy started following us. This concerned me, as I could not be sure if the dog could find its way back. I started yelling and otherwise acting mean (though no abuse) to discourage the puppy, finally prevailing. I felt bad and at the same time upset that the owner would risk the well-being of a puppy.
We ended in Hanover and were transported ahead to Madison to stay at the Fellowship Hall of the St. John United Church of Christ there. Church President Mike Gourley and Pastor Mike Straub came to greet us and went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. I kept insisting I was as comfortable sleeping on a floor as anywhere else but Pastor Mike insisted on bringing over an air mattress, regardless. We would be staying at the Fellowship Hall for the next three nights.

Thinking of all the kind folks at the Henryville High School in the wake of the tornado. Kirk, your journey has brought this all home in a very real way.

Greetings Ann,
Quite right. It’s surreal that I gave a talk at that high school. I just got word this evening that our host family there is OK.
