Leopold to Alton; Distance = 12 Miles; People Met = 3+
We arrived at Perry Central School at 8:30 to be ready to present during second period, starting at 8:50. Our first stop was at Kurt Cooper’s classroom, where we were greeted enthusiastically. Over one hundred students piled in for the presentation; I’m still amazed at how this was pulled off over a weekend’s notice.
The students were very attentive and respectful. A couple students came up at the end and declared we were their new heroes! Unfortunately, I did not even give them my best. I was under the weather with my head in a fog for the whole day. I knew I was rambling somewhat towards the end of the presentation, but at least I opened some young eyes to the problems we face and the value of community kindness.
The day was spectacular for January with mostly clear skies and temperatures reaching the sixties. We hiked along scenic dirt roads for much of the way. Alas, my head was in a fog and I derived no where near the pleasure I should have. On the other hand, Cindy was happy as a clam at high tide! She’s been more worried about the cold than anything else on this journey and we’ve made out like bandits in terms of warm winter weather.
A beautiful sunset put an exclamation point to what would have been one of the most rewarding days of the journey if only my head had been clear.
