After we finished off hiking yesterday we were brought to the St. Peters United Church of Christ in Lamar where I gave a talk to the Young Disciples program I had there. Little did any of us know this ahead of time, but my theme of kindness worked into the “fruits of the spirit” discussions they were having. This young group asked me lots of questions throughout the talk.
For such a rural area this was quite a large group of elementary school age kids. As I soon learned they were also a special, engaged group of kids. In particular I learned about the good deeds of Sidney Alcorn and Ethan Rose. Why don’t you listen to them yourselves?
No doubt one cause for such active youth is Pastor Chip Jahn. Both he and wife Gayle are funny, caring people. Many pastors we’ve come across have been at their parish for less than a decade; Pastor Chip has been at St. Peters for over 30 years. Since this day turned out to be a rest day that we spent at their house, we spent a considerable amount of time chatting with them. Pastor Chip and I hit it off when we shared with each other our warped ideas for road kill.
During the day we got a call from reporter Eric Tretter looking to do a story. He thought he was being assigned to a story about a new hiking club at St. Peters UCC. We set him straight when he arrived.

Kirk, Cindy and Ky were a wonderful surprize. Gayle and I had missed the Evansville coverage they recieved, but learned they were passing through the area from a friend and they were looking for a place to stay.
Kirk put together a spontaneous program with pictures, stories and music that fit the theme of gifts of the Spirit that our Young Disciples have been studying. It was interesting, inspiring and geared prefectly to his audience.
Greetings Chip,
Many thanks for the hospitality and opportunity you extended.
