Lawrence to Eudora; Distance = 12 Miles; People Met = 2
The first part of the hike from Lawrence to Eudora was through the city of Lawrence, population over 100,000 and the campus of Kansas University. We stopped a student named Emily and asked her for directions because the road we were looking for disappeared, gobbled up by the campus.

Lawrence could have been a town anywhere in the east or west, with rolling hills and abundant trees. Once we got outside of town we entered the more typical Kansas landscape of relatively level farm fields.

We were able to stay at Tall Oaks Christian Camp near Linwood for a few evenings. That turned out to be a blessing as Cindy came down with my cold, leading us to take a day off after reaching Eudora. The camp is run by Sharon Bracken, a Minnesota transplant who met her husband at a Christian college in Iowa.

I got a chance to talk to Sharon the day after she returned from serving with Micah Ministry. This is an ecumenical Christian effort to help the needy in the Northeast area of Kansas City, based on the passage in Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, humankind, what is good; so what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God…”
Faith-based groups and civic volunteers join together to provide home-cooked suppers, 35,000 of them over the course of the year. Like these sort of ministries everywhere they are facing increased need and are challenged to find the resources to meet that need. In addition to serving food they have both children and adult clothing pantries in addition to health kits.
