Distance > 13 Miles; People Met = 3
Barrett started hiking with us today, which keeps a fine tradition going. “Back in the day” I organized long distance expeditions, groups of people forming a community guided by the journey along a National Scenic Trail. That is what got me interested and informed about the social structure of early nomads. On those previous expeditions there were usually other people that attached themselves to our mobile community, at least for awhile. So it is for now with Barrett, making the experience all the richer.
Barrett proved to be just a prelude to an extraordinary experience. I picked up my backpacker’s guitar at Cave Lake CG, the first time in a couple of weeks. I rehearsed some of the songs by The Bards of Balance — oh, by the way, if you are getting sick of listening to Humility, Faith and Courage when you come to this site click on one of our other songs below it. Suddenly a man came jogging down from the campsite above us saying “I just had to come and tell you how beautiful your music is …..”
At that point the man spotted Barrett and was sidetracked immediately. The two already had met, because the man was Ted Oxborrow, Nevada Coordinator for the American Discovery Trail. Ted and his son Trevor were camping there while in the midst of providing support for Brian Starks, the first person to run the American Discovery Trail and was now in the process of running just the Nevada portion for the cause of Nevada parks.
That meant that Brian was in the next campsite as well and soon he came down to join us. Four ADT hikers in the same place at the same time! To appreciate that novelty, Ted mentioned that probably only 10-20 people have hiked the whole trail at this point, while Brian told us the ADT board attempted to have a reunion of ADT hikers and only gathered two. Yet here in the same campground, in neighboring campsites, were four ADT hikers and three ADT support people.
If only my music could do as well generating some income as it can unite ADT folks I’ll be all set!
