We started out hiking on the wrong side of the fence, by a marsh south of Carson Lake, quite a contrast to the ubiquitous desert scenery.
Once we got back on the right side of the fence, in other words, on public BLM lands, we knew we were in desert once again.
The day ended with crossing a salt flat to get to US 50, along with a few miles on the “loneliest highway.” This was the last of three days in the nineties, with one day over one hundred. We thought this was typical, but then I referred to the weather data I compiled before the trip. For this period in June we exceeded the average high by around fifteen degrees.
