A high school classmate of mine, Leslie McCormick Melody, joined us for the first 13 miles. She might have felt we played a cruel joke on her. The first 9 miles were quite easy and enjoyable; we finally had a sunny day. Leslie felt the miles a little bit but decided she had 4 miles left in her body. The next 4 miles, over the Lafayette Ridge, were by far the toughest miles on the hike so far.
She was still smiling when she left though, and that’s the great thing about friends coming out to hike with you. The time flies by with enjoyment.
