Come On Over!

We’ve had our first visitors since being back home. They were from the Bruderhof, a religious community that once was located in Norfolk. I’ve kept in touch with them over the years. As an advocate of community myself we agree about many things. They were here for a very short time, but long enough to leave Cindy with a happy smile, commenting “That was fun!” after they left. Yesterday visited my brother Ernie and Susie, about a block away. As we left Cindy exclaimed the very same thing.

Our PCT journey makes clear two challenges in front of me now that we are home. One is to continue with outdoor exercise, even in the Connecticut cold. That’s a daunting task, perhaps impossible if we don’t head towards a warmer climate, but I’m the only one that can make that happen in any case. The second challenge requires your help.

Nothing buoys Cindy and maintains her vibrancy more than people. The data on my blog shows I have readers from all over, but most still are from home. I appeal to you to come visit, as the Bruderhof folks just did. Once we settle back in I plan to have folks over once a week to look at slides from the PCT journey. This serves the dual purpose of reinforcing in Cindy’s mind her self-esteem as an “Expedition Woman” and providing the company that brings such a happy smile to her face. When it comes to people I am the geek who used to write and speak about the virtues of kindness and community before Alzheimer’s became my main cause. Cindy is the practitioner that warms those around her, just as she is warmed.

We will accept visitors at any time, any day. Perhaps we could come to your place, or I could drop Cindy off and then hit the local library to do some research and writing. Don’t be hesitant! Don’t be shy! Any acquaintance with good vibes will do wonders … for both of us.

This blog will continue on, merging our current life with a look back on past journeys, keepin up wit themes of kindness, community and Alzheimer’s. Up next for posts are “Joy of Living, Joy of Life” and “The Networked Approach to Alzheimer’s. Stay tuned; donate to the Exercise for Brain Health Research Fund if you can; leave a comment here or contact me by any means if interested in visiting.

There’s no place like home, to be sure. I’m remembering how I met you guys and how you opened your home to me in my time of need. It was such a powerful and selfless act that made a timely graduation possibleand I’ll never forget your hospitality and support. I’m still deciding whether to return stateside in February or continue with my travels and see a little more of the world. If I do return in Feb I will visit for sure and we can maybe have another taco party and maybe a wintry hike with Cindy while you pursue your study. I’d love that!
